The dry winter season: the classic window
The best beach weather in Cuba falls in the dry winter season, running roughly from November to April. These are the months associated with the calmest seas, the clearest water and the most reliable sunshine, which is why they form the classic window for a sun-and-sand holiday. On the low-lying cays and along exposed strips like Varadero, the settled conditions of this period show the pale sand and turquoise shallows at their best.
Because this is the peak season for beach travel, it is also the busiest and most sought-after time to visit, so the trade-off for the finest weather is more company on the sand and greater demand for accommodation.
The hurricane season and the wetter months
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November and overlaps with Cuba's wetter, more humid part of the year. During this period the weather is less predictable, with a higher chance of heavy rain and storms that can affect the coast, particularly on the exposed cays. This does not mean the beaches are off-limits, but it does mean conditions can change quickly and are less reliable than in winter.
Travellers who visit in these months often trade the risk of unsettled weather for quieter beaches and, at times, a more relaxed atmosphere. If you do travel in hurricane season, it is wise to keep plans flexible and to keep an eye on conditions, especially for trips centred on the low offshore islands.
Matching the season to your beach
The right timing can depend on the kind of beach trip you have in mind. For the postcard conditions on the cays such as Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Santa Maria, or a long resort stay at Varadero, the dry winter months are the safest bet for calm, clear water. Snorkellers and divers heading to the Bay of Pigs or Maria la Gorda also generally get the best underwater visibility in the drier, calmer season.
Whenever you go, the tropical sun is strong for most of the year, so sun protection and plenty of water matter across all seasons. Building your beach trip around the November to April window gives you the best odds of the settled, sunny days that make Cuba's coast so appealing, while the shoulder edges of that window can offer a quieter compromise between weather and crowds.
