Guardalavaca and its neighbours
Guardalavaca is the best-known beach on the Holguin coast and the anchor of the region's resort scene. Set among green, hilly surroundings rather than low sandbars, it has a more sheltered, cove-like feel than the open strips further west. Nearby, Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero continue the same theme: pockets of pale sand tucked into a coastline that is noticeably greener and more contoured than the cays.
This part of the country appeals to travellers who want a beach holiday with a stronger sense of place. The landscape behind the beaches is part of the draw, and the compact, enclosed shape of the coves gives the area a more relaxed and personal atmosphere than the vast resort strips.

Because the eastern beaches are grouped along the Holguin coast, it is straightforward to base yourself in one resort area and still sample several nearby coves. Guardalavaca, Playa Esmeralda and Playa Pesquero are close enough to give you variety without long transfers, and the region works well for travellers who want to slow down and settle in one place.
As elsewhere in Cuba, timing shapes the experience. The dry winter season from November to April brings the calmest seas and most reliable sunshine, ideal for the sheltered coves of the east, while the June to November hurricane season can be more changeable. Combining the beaches with the green landscapes and nature that define this end of the island makes for a well-rounded trip, and the drier months give you the best chance of settled conditions to enjoy both.
